Reducing churn: everything happens in the first 30 days
A customer who leaves in month three often decided to leave in week one. Here's how to get the start of the relationship right.
A customer who cancels rarely changed their mind overnight. Most often, they never really got started: they paid, they looked around, they didn't get a first result, and the subscription became just another expense.
Goal: a first result in under a week
The first result is proof that it works for them. Not the end of the road: a first concrete win.
- For coaching: a first action done and a first number obtained.
- For software: the first real task completed in the tool.
- For a course: the first exercise applied to their own case.
Identify that first result for your offer and design the whole onboarding to get there fast.
Three touchpoints that make the difference
- Day 1: a personal message. Not one more automated email: a few lines saying what to do first.
- Day 3 to 5: a check-in. "Were you able to do the first step?" Those who answer no are the ones who'll leave if you do nothing.
- Day 21: a progress review. What worked, what's stuck, what's next. It's also the right moment to ask for feedback.
Spot the weak signals
A customer who hasn't logged in for ten days, no longer opens your messages or stops replying is on the way out. Reach out before the renewal date, not after.
The number to track
The share of new customers who get their first result within the first week. When that number goes up, churn in the following months goes down.
