Asking for a referral without awkwardness: the right moment and the right sentence
Your happy customers know people like them. They just don't think of mentioning you. Make it easy for them.
A happy customer is the best source of new customers: they know people with the same problem, and their word carries more weight than yours. Yet most founders don't dare ask, or ask badly.
The right moment
Right after a result. The customer just closed a sale, saved time, reached a milestone. That's when they're most willing to help.
Not at invoice time, not after six months of silence.
The wrong ask
"If you know anyone who might be interested, let me know!" Too vague: nobody comes to mind, so nobody gets referred.
The right ask
Describe a specific person:
Glad it worked. Do you perhaps know another independent coach who struggles to get replies from leads? If so, I can offer them the same diagnostic you had.
A precise description brings up a name.
Make referring easy
- Offer a ready-made message the customer can forward.
- Give something to the referred person (a diagnostic, a lighter first month).
- Always say thanks, even when the referral doesn't sign.
The follow-up
Tell the customer when the person they referred becomes a customer. It's the best way to make them do it again.
The number to track
Referrals received per ten asks. Below two, your ask is too vague or comes at the wrong moment.
